Cleanliness Is the #1 Review Factor
Airbnb's Superhost requirements include maintaining a 4.8+ overall rating. Cleanliness is consistently the lowest-scored category — and the one that drags overall ratings down most.
In Malta specifically, guest expectations are set by the island's hotels. Tourists who pay €80-€150/night for an Airbnb expect hotel-level cleanliness. Anything less gets a 3 or 4-star review, which erodes your Superhost status fast.
What Guests Actually Rate
Based on thousands of Malta turnovers, these are the top cleanliness complaints:
- Bathroom limescale — White deposits on taps, shower screens, and toilet bowls. Guests associate limescale with "dirty"
- Hair — Previous guests' hair in the shower drain, on pillowcases, or on the bathroom floor. One strand is enough for a complaint
- Kitchen grease — A greasy hob or sticky countertop signals poor hygiene
- Musty smell — Properties closed between guests develop a stale smell. Ventilation matters
- Dusty surfaces — Especially windowsills, TV stands, and bedside tables. Malta's limestone dust makes this worse
The 5-Star Checklist
- Zero hair policy: Check every drain, every pillow, every bathroom floor. Use a lint roller on dark surfaces
- Limescale treatment: Spray chrome fixtures with limescale remover on every turnover, not just monthly
- Fresh air: Open all windows for 15 minutes during the clean. Close them 30 minutes before check-in so the AC cools the space
- Linen crispness: White, hotel-grade sheets pressed and tucked. No wrinkled duvet covers
- Smell check: Stand in the entrance after the clean. Does it smell fresh? If in doubt, leave a window cracked
- Lights on: Every light working. Replace dead bulbs immediately — dim rooms feel less clean
Consistency Over Perfection
One perfect clean followed by a mediocre one loses Superhost status faster than consistently good cleans. The key is standardisation:
- Written checklist: The same checklist, followed the same way, every turnover. See our Malta-specific checklist
- Photo documentation: Before-and-after photos hold your cleaning team accountable
- Same team: Rotating cleaners means retraining. Consistent teams know your property's quirks
- Feedback loop: Review every guest comment that mentions cleanliness. Identify patterns, fix root causes
